Who We Are

The Fall Line trail has 14 entities that play a leadership role in its plan, construction and its use. The Fall Line is a 43-mile long, north-south regional paved, shared use path connecting seven localities: Ashland, Hanover, Henrico, Richmond, Chesterfield, Colonial Heights, and Petersburg. In addition to the 7 local governments, both PlanRVA and the Crater Planning District Commission are involved, and the Central Virginia Transportation Authority, and the trail is supported by the Virginia Department of Transportation as well as a nonprofit partner Sports Backers and its Friends of the Fall Line group coordinating the private support of the project. 

The trail has private support of land owners, like Dominion Energy, that have provided sections of right away to the project. The partners have united together to turn the Fall Line into reality because the trail has the potential to reshape the way people travel, play, and connect with each other. As a result, meeting unmet demand for local infrastructure for active movement and providing a wide range of public benefits – from health and safety to economic development and sustainability.

Sports Backers inspires people in the Richmond region to live actively. As the original creators of the Fall Line trail concept in 2017, Sports Backers partners with all 7 local governments, VDOT, Plan RVA, CVTA and the Crater District Planning Commission. Sports Backers is moving to a Fall Line trailhead on Lakeside Avenue and will be leading its active living movement for the region from its trailside headquarters. Sports Backers continues to manage the coordination of the Fall Line trail through the Friends of the Fall Line workgroup, by maintaining the Fall Line website, coordinating marketing, managing trail-oriented events, organizing volunteer support, encouraging funding of the trail and soliciting funding for amenities outlined in the Fall Line Vision Plan.

Local Governments

The Central Virginia Transportation Authority provides funding for transportation projects within Central Virginia.

PlanRVA is an organization comprising nine local governments for the purpose of encouraging collaboration to address regionally significant issues and opportunities. They have been instrumental in facilitating the Fall Line as a part of the regional transportation network.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is the primary funder of construction and maintenance for state highways, roads, trails, and sidewalks. VDOT has played a pivotal role in the creation, funding and construction of the Fall Line trail.
